A Mark Felton production.

Imagine being a German pilot in June of 1944. Trying your best to protect your homeland from the inevitable.

Am I glad they lost? Absolutely. But I would be lying if I said that I don't have great respect for those pilots in their courage to fight, despite the high risk of death. Taking friendly fire on the way out is yet another example of the high cost of war.

German battle tactics especially tank battles are taught at West Point. The American military adopted many of them.

Last two years the Germans were superior at turning what looked like a defeat into a win or draw and fight again.

I don’t pay attention to the propaganda of the victors too much. I like to read and watch vids from the German POV.

As a Veteran it’s easy to admire their early successes based on discipline and blitzkrieg tactics. Early on in the war one German was killing up to 10 enemy soldiers. Too bad Hitler was an asshole because the German people decidedly were not. Or as Marge Schott said, he was okay in the beginning.

I’ve already seen it, thank you. A great movie indeed.

For those who like to read “The Forgotten Soldier” by Guy Sajer is excellent but very sobering.

There is also a German made series Das Boot, its worth watching too.  My son was in the Navy on submarines, he said the move Das Boot is a cult classic in the submarine service.

Das Boot, is mentioned above and it indeed is a classic, worth watching. Regarding submarine movies there is I guess what can be called an entire sub-genre in war films. Some sort of funny, Operation Petticoat and The Russians are Coming to tragic such as The Enemy Below and In Enemy's Hands. There is an Australian film about a sub that travels after a disaster, war or plague? ? ? to the North as the planet is dying. Can not think of the name of it.

Perhaps Subby Cuffy might share his favourites?

This was a late in the war operation, where a tiny American unit joined forces with the German Army to fight the SS and rescue some French VIP’s.

EDIT TO ADD: The Germans who joined in to fight with Americans had switched sides at the end of the war and were led by an Austrian officer.

Night Swallows is a series available on Amazon included with Amazon Prime.
It's about Russian women who fly on various missions in rattle trap planes
and is based on true stories. It's in Russian with subtitles. Angel Eyes and
I watched the entire series.

Another series The Attackers, Set during World War 2. Two young air force pilots,
arrive at flight training school only to find that they have been sent to the
active force regiment and will be going directly to the frontline. I haven't
watched this series yet.

Another series Spies
Set during World War II. Arina and Zoya are two young secret agents who go
behind the enemy lines in Riga, Crimea, Poland and Germany. They collaborate
with adversaries and combat their enemies from within. They are fearless,
smart, strong and always escape the clear and present danger during wartime

All these series are available with Amazon prime in Russian with English subtitles.

German soldiers drive away from the oncoming Soviets and surrender to the Americans. A very sobering looking event. What's interesting is that there are quite a few civilian women with them who were likely girlfriends.

This shows why it's important to understand the power of place of birth. What you are taught since you're a child or young man results in whether or not you might be convinced to go to war.

Come and See, is not a pretty film. But well worth seeing if you do not mind how graphic the horrors of war are.

Released in the waning days of The Soviet Union it is now recognized as a masterpiece.

The second clip is an English language overview giving some background.

Come and See was like a nightmare about war while on LSD.... :o Thx for sharing Av.

This is the first short film in the Dusty Faces series. This is a series of films made in Germany on a low budget about WWII from the German perspective. Very realistic and more or less anti-war.

A good friend while I was stationed in Germany had me over to meet his parents for dinner once. His father was captured at Stalingrad and was one of the few to make it out alive. To give perspective, of the 95,000 captured, only 5,800 made it out alive by 1956.

This is the story of a German Pilot who was given to the Soviets. Shameful really what the allies did to some of the Germans, and especially what they allowed to happen to civilians.
