Routinely moving money from Russia to USA
« on: June 07, 2019, 07:44:21 AM »
Wife is working part time (consulting) for a Russian company that operates in Europe.  This is there first attempt at this (USA based ) transfer services are cost prohibitive to the company (they say)  should we be pushing to cover the fees our self for transferwire or let them attempt bank wires.  They are paying european employees this way so they expected Iban and swift codes to setup transfer but we don't use iban in USA, and that is causing some confusion.

We use Paysend in an addition to transferwise and Opal transfer - but :

from where in Europe / Russia do you want to send funds and .

to where ?

Sending to the USA appears out but you can send money from Russia to other Europe destinations - and even in USD dollars to Ukraine, Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, Axerbaijan, Malaysia and Singapore

Sending R Roubles with paysend to an RU card is near INSTANT from the UK or Georgia - in GBP or GEL ...  Sending from Russia to the UK in GBP can be minutes or hours...

The US is still quite backward in banking. They still sign bits of paper when using credit cards, use cheques (checks), and as you say, dont participate in IBAN like in the civilised world. They are also known to be silly with anything to do with Russia.

You should pay the extra fees they incur to send to the US as it's not the Russian company's fault that the US is stuck in 1979 banking wise.

Personally, I'd transfer to a European EU or UK bank account. Or use a location like Hong Kong or Singapore that is used to cross border transactions. (Personally, I'd avoid Ukraine, Turkey, Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan as mentioned above like the plague).

If you are limited to banking in the US - which as a US citizen is likely - then you'll have to stomach the fees that the rules where you live impose on those trying to pay you.

She has a working bank card from Russia so they decided to pay her on that.   She will have to figure what to do from there I guess, but she has used it via Amazon here in the states in the past.

If banking costs are an issue for the company I bet other problems will arise. I'd expect to have problems with payment (delays and amounts).

I'd suggest TransferWise rather than her Russian bank card. That's going to give her a Euro bank account with Iban and transfers to dollars are easy. There's also a debit card available to make life easier.

Probably, I think she had only tried it via Amazon so far.
