Shakey is Soon Free!
« on: September 08, 2018, 05:15:17 PM »
I received an invitation in the snail mail today all the way from the US of A.

People don't use snail mail any more do they? I love it when I get something from the US with good old fashioned stamps all over the envelope. I was told "You have an invitation from America, it says so on the envelope, I didn't open it. I left it for you. It looked important what with the stamps and all......."

I tried to adopt a statesmanlike face and said, "Ahh yes, my good friend Bradley I'll bet, perhaps he is governor of the state already, I'll attend to this important communique myself" and snatched it from her grasp and scuttled off with it. :coffeeread:

It was an invitation to the US to attend a small but select gathering from a certain gentleman of this parish named Bradley, or Brad to his pals.

Unfortunately, wifey and I have no current ESTA (visa) for the US, I am in China half of October and she chose Sicily over FL for our pre-Xmas break already so with the remaining school holidays this year, more travel is difficult for us. Much as we like the US and also I have not seen Brad for ages - this one we will have to decline.

I'll leave Brad to tell RUA the nature of the celebration.

Nothing much Stuart.

On December 1st I will make the last of my $4000 per month spousal
support payments.  I thought it was a good reason to host a party.

Party starts at 2:00pm on October 7th at the Sharp homestead.

What do you do when you finally pay off your mortgage?  You burn the
mortgage.  So at 4:00 were are going to be having a little ceremony where
all the guests get to join me in celebration by burning the page of my divorce
decree that discusses spousal support payments.

Fireworks at 8pm

Food, first class booze, beer, wine and good cigars will be available.

The party will be on my back porch and I'm short of patio chairs so I suggest
you bring one if you want to sit.

BTW - since when does the holder of a British passport need a visa to enter the USA?

I always thought your lot could fly in and be granted a 90-day tourist visa upon arrival at the airport?

Nope. We need a visa. Being the US, they call it visa waiver:-\  But one must order it in advance, pay online, often wait for approval and be deported if you arrive without one. So its a visa.

It appears you could fly to Toronto or Mexico City and drive into the USA without a visa and then fly home.

But you need a visa when flying directly to the USA

Yes - for 48 months.  Total $192,000.

I believe since the mortgage company has a lien on your property title until it is paid off, you should have filed an addendum to the property deed that states that the mortgage was paid off at the county clerk land office.  I don't think the mortgage company is going to notify the county office when you have a zero balance on the account.

Congrats Shakey! So what are you going to be doing with that extra money you'll have at your disposal? Treat yourself to a new car? Could get a pretty nice one at 4,000 per month payments!

Nope. We need a visa.

Nope - we do not need a 'visa'

It is part of the Visa WAIVER program and it is a piece of  xxxx to get ..$14 each and you need to apply apply at least 72 hours beforehand - hardly a barrier to travel ...

Funny law.

Sadly not. One gets stopped at the United States border and the waiver documents are created and authorised. The waiver is valid for 90 days and is affixed to the passport. So, the difference is that one applies for the visa waiver at the point of entry rather than before.

As usual, if it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck then it's a visa. :)

The waiver is valid for 90 days and is affixed to the passport.

Incorrect

It is valid for two years - or shorter if your passport expires earlier than two years

You can stay up to 90 days per trip ....

It can be valid for up to ten years (tourist). I believe for an upstanding chap such as Manny he can enjoy the hospitality of the United States for up to 90 days as a tourist. Of course with a Mancunian accent . . .

Note: You may NOT travel to the United States if your passport expires with 6 months.

I think that some people are getting bound up in irrelevant detail. Kinda normal for the bored people.

Shakespear thought it was possible for a Briton to drive from Canada to the USA without the normal documentation. That's not correct. One must do as I wrote. The paper in the passport, obtained when driving from Canada to the USA, the visa waiver, is valid for a single stay of 90 days.

The electronic service ESTA, which is not applicable in this context, lasts for 2 years and is valid for multiple trips of up to 90 days. That process is for arrivals by air or ship and must be obtained before departure from the UK.

Moby, remember you are much less bright than your mummy told you. You have a poor eye for detail and that, in concert with your inflated self worth, causes you to make unforced errors.

...everything ends always well; if it’s still bad, then it’s not the end!

The electronic service ESTA, which is not applicable in this context, lasts for 2 years and is valid for multiple trips of up to 90 days.

Which is EXACTLY what I told you....

"Approved ESTA applications are valid for a period of two years, or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and multiple trips to the United States without the traveler having to re-apply for another ESTA. When traveling to the U.S. with the approved ESTA, you may only stay for up to 90 days at a time - and there should be a reasonable amount of time between visits so that the CBP Officer does not think you are trying to live here. There is no set requirement for how long you must wait between visits."

You should get off you ample ass and do the thing you google about, andrewfi ...  trying to 'spoil' ANOTHER thread with your fantasy versions of my existence ...?
