The Half Millionth Post Is on the Horizon
« on: April 26, 2018, 04:30:45 PM »
The post counter is showing 474231 right now, so we are around 25k posts off a half million posts.

In 2007 at 20,000 posts, our member Jinx won a $200 Amazon gift certificate.

In 2008 at 50,000 posts, members raised over $1000 for an FSU children's charity.

In 2009 at 100,000 posts, our member Voyager won $50.

In 2010 at 150,000 posts, our member Donhollio won $50.

The site is now over a decade old and coming up to its half millionth post, so it may be time to do something again. Personally, I liked the 2008 fundraiser and the charity donation. But I thought I'd see what folks here thought a good idea. We can then bung a newsletter out and raise the profile of the event a bit.
I apologise.
And so he should.........

I was thinking of donating to Russian/Ukrainian Orphanage(s)  , but all of those do-gooders seem to be run by jesus-freaks (as in: Very religious, not normal religious).

Something FSU related would be nice.

I recall children from Belarus & Ukraine coming over to Scotland on a visit. It was about supporting children and families suffering from the Chernobyl fallout. They reckoned that even a week in the Scottish fresh air would do wonders for their health.

Not sure what others think but here's some links;

Looks alright to me.

Doesn't it cost them money to use the "Just Giving" site they use? If we e-mail them we can find out how we might go about bunging them a lump sum direct.
I apologise.

There was a tv drama about that, Alun Armstrong, called The Girls That Came, supposedly from Gomel.

I used to have it on avi, ill check if i still have.
The girls were real FSU kids.

My mate in Bolton did similar every year, i remember him ringing cos the kids wanted to go someehere and he didnt understand, think it was ‘Amerikanskiy Gork’ which is rollercoaster i think. This 1995 and the 80’s had just reached Bolton...

Apparently, the term seems to be translated to "American mountains".  However, an earlier form of "Russian mountains" existed back in the 17th century.

I like the suggestion and idea of Rosco, a charity helping the children affected by Chernobyl. It has a nice balance the Soviet past versus the children the future.

Anyone have a suitable charity in mind?

Charities are rife with corruption. The money rarely gets to intended people.

Look at the “Salvation Army” in USA. Most of the money funds lavish lifestyle’s for the top officers.

Some sort of gift card for the poster who hits the target would be my choice.
