Keep expectations low!

My wife doesn't expect a gleaming house when I am in charge of it.
I'm not particularly messy and tend to keep things somewhat clean
as I go. If I spill something, I wipe it up.

My wife went home to visit Mamma for a little longer than a month.
My job expectation was to keep most of the plants alive and not have
any evidence of wild orgies.

The plants lived (barely) and I didn't have any wild orgies, so I met
or exceeded expectations. Angel Eyes gave the entire house a thorough
cleaning when she got home just like she did before she left.

That's pretty much how it works when my wife visits the folks. In fact she harasses me to make sure I've watered plants.

But cleaning top to bottom before she comes back? Nope. Not my job. Like cutting the grass, taking out rubbish, fixing stuff about the place or replacing a roof tile isn't her job.

I would think that household repair (plumbing, appliances, cars, furniture, electronics, windows, lighting, HVAC, floors, walls, decks, fireplace, fans, filters, etc.) should be familiar to all who live in a household.  Washing the clothes and doing the dishes (while a tedious daily chore) does not quite cut it.
An uninformed opponent is a dangerous opponent.

It's a variant of "bringing home the bacon". See the Michael caine film "A Shock to the System" for examples.

NEVER heard of it used in such a context and couldn't see it in urban dictionary, either ... although they do list some more meanings for the term that are unrepeatable ;)

I’m not British and I immediately understood what he wrote. What is WRONG with you? Were you dropped on your head as a small child?

I understood it too, but thats also because in Dutch there is a similar saying as 'slaying the dragon' , meaning you are out doing a difficult job that has to be done.

Like any lefty Guardianista, Moby is master of twisting words, deliberately misinterpreting their intent to either feign offence on behalf of others or simply to troll.

It's a classic left thing. The type of nonsense that stopped little kids singing "Baa Baa Black Sheep" in schools.

Moby must know now that such nonsense gathers no traction here and people just tell him to stop being a div*.  :chuckle:

* Moby will find that in the Urban Dictionary he likes.

I'm such a 'master of words' yet neither I, nor Urban dictionary, use / list your 'version' of "Slaying the dragon" ;)

As "only a div" would define me as a 'Guardianista' - you must be very proud of your Soviet-style, editing of my profile and posts  :coffeeread:

Going back to the topic, after a worthwhile poke at our resident indigent, I am looking forward to what I find when I get back to Estonia. My fiancee and her son have taken up residence, at my suggestion, while I am away slaying a different kind of dragon.

The day she moved in she told me she was going to clean son's room and the kitchen. A short while later she told me that there had been a change of plan and that everything was going to be cleaned. It seems that my cleaning duties will be increased when I return.

I hope that I still recognize the place as my home when I return.

As a side note, we decided to do this because it seemed a way to get her son accustomed to living there and that they can make 'cozy home' without my interference. Priority was the lad as, while he has been very positive and supportive, this whole thing was not his choice, even though he wants his mum to have a husband and for himself, maybe, a male balance to his life. I wanted to have him feel able to carve out his own place without too much consideration for me.

Thank you for finally answering my long standing question. Are you argumentative or are you simple?

Clearly you're simple if you had to google Manny's expression to understand what he was saying.....and still ended up confused.  :(

Gotta show willing.

But it is like when I was a kid: told to do washing up. Didn't want to.
Dropped a glass bowl. Shouty mother but fewer orders to do washing up after that.

My wife is our house manager. I don't micromanage her
while she manages the house, she does a far better job
than I would  and she doesn't micromanage me while
I work.

My wife does 90% of the gardening. She loves fresh
vegetables and flowers. Every spring, she assigns me
some shovel work, moving rocks around and I mow
the yard every week to ten days and pretty soon,
we are eating salads with tasty home grown
vegetables and fresh flowers on the table.

We know our roles, it works out pretty well.

Hey Bill, how are you defending your garden against varmints? We've set up some screening around ours but we seem to have a critter getting through anyway. No tasty, home-grown veggies for us (yet)... we're considering an electric perimeter. Got any simpler ideas (beyond screening)?

I just know I'll be the first 'critter' getting shocked if we go the electrified route.

Oh man I am glad I found this thread, so its not just my wife.  Im having my wife see an OCD psychologist on it its so bad.  She cleans daily to the point its annoying.  We stayed at a five star hotel in Manhattan a few months ago and It was less clean than our apartment.  We could eat Thanksgiving dinner off of our floor and it would be cleaner than 99.9 percent of the tables in the US.  Its gotten to the point where shes annoyed by touching cabinet handles because it gets fingerprints on it, shower curtain rings have to be perfectly lined up, and I have to eat over the kitchen sink.  But, shes finally going to the psychologist about it.  I hope to god we can turn a corner on it because some days it puts me at whits end.  My current coping mechanism is just leave until shes done cleaning, but its only a temporary solution.  Hopefully this psych can teach her that having dinner over the kitchen sink is not okay.  But I understand it man, its crappy.  Ive known a few who have this OCD too, it might be more common in the FSU.  It would be an interesting psych project for a grad school student for sure.

My wife will clean everything more than once (in the same day).

It is some Slavic thing that the inside of the house has to be PERFECTLY clean, I assume (hope) it will pass with time.

Oddly enough she could not understand that I wanted the bilge clean before I removed and cleaned the fuel filter and injector. I explained that if I dropped something I might never find it again. It is an odd logic that women use.

Nope, her son and I make jokes about her 'need' for cleanliness. She has always been like this. Even she can see how over the top it is & she laugh at her self as well regarding this.

If one is by nature a moving pig pen (untidy) is it fair to have another human clean up the mess?

Curious how far away does Moby need to move? The next room, the balcony, the nearest pub, a distant city, an unknown continent?

What about the rest of us?
