Ireland meets Ophelia

"DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK

At 1100 AM AST (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Ophelia was
located near latitude 41.6 North, longitude 16.0 West. Ophelia is
moving toward the north-northeast near 38 mph (61 km/h), and this
motion is expected to continue during the next 24 to 48 hours. On
the forecast track, the center of the post-tropical cyclone will
approach Ireland tomorrow morning. However, strong winds and rains
should begin earlier.

Maximum sustained winds are near 90 mph (150 km/h) with higher
gusts.  Additional weakening is forecast, but Ophelia should
maintain hurricane force winds until it reaches Ireland.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150 miles
(240 km).

The estimated minimum central pressure is 973 mb (28.74 inches)."

I hope tomorrow Ste and the other Irish members, and a day or so later Rosco, have there wellies and oilskins in order.

It is called the calm before the storm. In another light it is like when your woman from Russia or Ukraine arrives at your home initially.

A tuxedo perhaps? Though I think they are called macks on the islands.

Ophelia will be a major damaging storm for Ireland

Ophelia is expected to complete the transition to an extratropical storm southwest of Ireland late Sunday night and early Monday morning. As this process unfolds, the wind field will expand, and top winds will weaken to about 120 kph (74 mph), but Ophelia still promises to be a large-scale damaging wind event for Ireland. The Irish weather service has issued a Red Alert for western Ireland for Monday, including Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork and Kerry Counties, where sustained winds over 80 kph (50 mph) and gusts over 130 kph (80 mph) are expected. Expect tree damage and uprooted trees, damaged roofs, power blackouts, mobile phone coverage interruptions, and flying debris. An orange wind warning has been issued for the remainder of Ireland, where maximum sustained winds of 65 – 80 kph (40 – 50 mph) are likely, with gusts up to 110 – 130 kph (70 – 80 mph.) The U.K. Met Office has issued an amber warning for wind on Monday in Northern Ireland. The warning indicates that some transportation delays are possible, and there is a chance of power outages.

Winds will begin to strengthen in southern Ireland in the pre-dawn hours Monday morning, with trpoical storm-force winds arriving near dawn. The main impact will come Monday afternoon and evening, though. The center of Ophelia will reach the southwest coast of Ireland near noon local time, and will take about six hours to cross the island. An intense 3 to 6-hour period of high winds and rains of 25 – 75 mm (1 - 3”) will accompany the storm. In higher terrain, winds will be about 30% higher than at sea level, and an extra 25 mm (1”) of rain can be expected.

Working from home in the village where I live in Co. Dublin, my landlord tells me the supermarkets is closing at lunchtime and the offy (off-licence, liquor store in US) is rammed to the gills.

Gotta love the Irish.....

Ophelia, might in the end be nothing more than a stiff gale with lots of warm rain. It will last some 5 to 10 hours and than everything will return to normal on Tuesday.

Some will have there giggles about naughty things done, like a crop of Ophelia's born in 9 or so months. Others might say the Yanks are a bunch of toddlers crying about some spilt milk. They will say those in the Carribbean do not know how to build anything.

To the south in Bristol there are amazing images of a blood red sun and pure yellow sky.

From various forecasts it looks like Ophelia or the remains will pass to over Western and Northern Ireland today (now) and over the more Northern parts of Scotland late Tuesday. One could say she sprinted North and lost allot of energy.

I noticed all the birds are chirping constantly, maybe they know something we don't.

So we get all the attention, nothing happens and it's more interesting in UK! It's Brexit, that's what it is....
