China looks at ending sales of gasoline cars

Still a few years into the future, when this is possible, but it definitely would cut into Russian oil sales to China.

I've seen quite a few articles like this in the last few years. I don't doubt that as alternative energies become more viable we'll start to see more and more of them, but until the technology has matured to the point of being practical for everyone, an all-out ban isn't prudent. As an example from the US, someone who lives alone is SoCal and works a desk job can get along perfectly well with an electric or hybrid. But someone who lives anywhere in the North and is a contractor or has a big family is really going to struggle with an electric vehicle. When cold weather HVs/EVs become a practical reality, I think most every country will adopt incentive programs to make the switch, but it's not going to happen by 2040 (at least not in the USA).

I am all for it

* Almost no money anymore to the sand people, as their economy is driven entirely on oil-industry
* Cleaner planet
* No more smog.

Unless magic happens there's going to be a lot of oil and gas burned making the electricity that is going to power these cars.

Politically this is a great move. China already makes a huge proportion of the electric vehicles built globally and their market is about 1 in 3 of all cars sold worldwide.

This is a great opportunity to capture a new market sector to China. In addition, China is working to decrease 'dirty' power generation as they expand power generation overall. This provides a good boost to that sector as well whilst also cleaning the air over Chinese cities.

Joined up industrial planning again.

Electric cars just mean moving the dirty air somewhere else.

In other words let the untermenschen live with our crap...

If you've been to China then you know already of the benefits of moving pollution generation away from the exhaust system of millions of urban vehicles.

Alongside China's program of reduction of electricity generation pollution then their proposals make good sense. Tied into their desire to take leadership in electric car production and root that production in domestic consumption again makes sense.

Anyway, we're you not all googly eyed over some electric car called a Tesla a few months ago?

While I am not ever sure what Ste is googly eyes about, unless it has strings, the comments of Andrew are correct regarding moving pollution.

Yes much electricity will be generated by fossil fuel, coal, gas and oil but it is easier to clean one generating point than a million cars exhaust systems.

Yes I had a pop in a Tesla S, fast and silent but since then I’ve been test driving Maseratis and there’s no comparison. I’m with Trump on this one, fook the environment...

I guess Russia could benefit in the long run. If China looks to a green solution.

Unless magic happens there's going to be a lot of oil and gas burned making the electricity that is going to power these cars.

Exactly,

The electrical grid in Europe or the USA could no way handle switching to
electric cars. Also the government gets huge tax monies from gasoline and
diesel, what would they do without all that revenue? My guess is that they
don't decide that they can live without it, rather that they make those electric
car owners pay all those taxes.

I have no idea what the superior people would do. They will have to think of
something. The people who only bought an electric car so that they could
prove that they are superior to everyone else? This isn't something that can
easily be replaced with a bumper sticker like the Coexist sticker or Free Tibet.
These people are going to need something else to fill that void in their lives,
if everyone is buying electric cars then they really aren't that superior are
they?

Maybe they could live in refrigerator boxes in the park or use their own urine
to bathe with? but who would know? You can't be superior if nobody knows about
it. They would need a "I bathe with pee-pee badge?" or something to proclaim
their exalted status.
