Belorus isn't Russia mate, though it is really. Like English and Scotland. I can say that now cos Rosco is out fighting ChickenWings....

I'd say that's a pretty fair comparison. Whilst proudly being a Belorussian, my wife often refers to herself as Russian too. I don't spend too much time trying to analyse it.

The same for my wife born and raised in Ukraine, she uses Ukraine and Russia interchangeably as to identity. There is an expression 'mother Russia' but now the 'kids' are growing up and do not desire the protection and meddling.

Russianness is more than a stamp on a passport, it is a state of mind and an understanding of heritage. Kinda like being English for example, I am English and have a British passport. If I had a French passport I would still be English.

In the other direction, a person's who migrates to the UK and gets a British passport will be British but, in my opinion, never English.

So, given that Russian people are found in all parts of the world, they may carry many passports but they remain Russian. Mr Putin has alluded to this in the past when referring to the collapse of the Soviet Union and how thee was a huge tragedy that millions of Russians now found themselves separated from their home country and that, in his opinion, Russia should still defend the interests of those 'stranded' Russian people.

Of course, not all overseas people of Russian origin see themselves as Russian, many do not and, living where I do, I sometimes find people who speak Russian, live in Russian communities, work and socialise with Russian speaking people say that they are not Russian.
...everything ends always well; if it’s still bad, then it’s not the end!

So, given that Russian GREEK people are found in all parts of the world, they may carry many passports but they remain Russian Greek.

Absolutely correct in both comments. Arrived here in August 1970......but I will never be English,
I was not born here and feelings for your birth country never chance!

Substituting the word Russian with Greek.... and the story it's exactly the same!

Well done Andrew.

Does she have Spanish residency? If she's separated recently after marriage she most likely won't be legal. Could be looking for a visa mule, even one from Britain with Brexit looming and oncoming no Freedom of Movement.

Rosco here married a Belorus girl, wait for him, but my spider sense is tingling I'm afraid, things just don't stack up..

Spanish citizenship is one of the easiest in the EU to obtain. IIRC, a legal spouse of a Spaniard can apply for it (not even a residency, but a citizenship!) after only one year of marriage.

Thank you, AvHdB!

I wanted to introduce myself there initially, but thought better of it. Don't want a whole personal introduction thread for my humble persona. tiphat
