Malorossiya
« on: July 18, 2017, 02:31:51 PM »
The Donetsk People's Republic has declared the establishment of a new country - Malorossiya - which the local leadership described as a successor state to Ukraine.

DONETSK (Sputnik) — Self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) Leader Alexander Zakharchenko proposed on Tuesday a three-year transition period toward a new state called Malorossiya ("Little Russia") as a way to settle the three-year conflict.

There's something odd about this. It seems that the announcement was made without the folks in LPR having agreed to such a thing.

The Russian position is clear and consistent. The LPR/DPR are part of Ukraine and should remain so.

The reality, that it is the Kievan regime's inability to implement the matters to which they agreed under Minsk 2 that are forcing developments in the LPR and DPR and, at some point there will be a joined administration covering the two regions. It looks as though today, right now, is not that time. I don't expect that unless, something very major happens, that there will be any likelihood that Russia will incorporate the LPR/DPR into the Russian Federation. I do expect that Russian documentation, legislation, relationships will tend to become more prevalent in the vacuum left by the absence of the Ukrainian state from the region.
...everything ends always well; if it’s still bad, then it’s not the end!

Plenty of time for that. It'll likely happen when Ukraine breaks up properly.

Wishful thinking ?

I don't know how many largely unrecognised 'countries' you've been to, - I've been to a few  - including the 'Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus' and 'Abkhazia'  - and there is a charm in the distinct lack of investment and surrealism that brings, but 35 years on the 'TRNC' is still waiting ..

Hardly wishful, what happens in Ukraine doesn't really put a dent in my day either way. Although I am sorry for all the lives lost unnecessarily as a result of the EU/US intervention and regime change in Ukraine that created the current troubles.

I think it's safe to say the east of Ukraine (Donetsk, Lugansk, et al) that have declared a desire to be independent and/or closer to Russia, who eschew control from Kiev, will never again reunite with what is left of Ukraine in its current guise. Crimea has already gone and won't return.

It is quite possible what remains of Ukraine will break up yet further as Willy Wonka Poroshenko continues his EU/US funded war on dissidents. It may be the case that in time, even if the Malorossiya proposal does not gain traction, there will eventually be a territory that encompasses Donetsk, Lugansk, et al and later includes a land bridge to Crimea. It likely won't be part of the Russian Federation for many years, but it will be as close as say Belarus in all practical aspects.

If Poroshenko continues on this course, Kharkov might also separate , they are also very much pro-russian and always have been. Although their beliefs have wavered in this war, they are growing tired very much with Poroshenko.

I have said before, looong ago, that Ukraine would break up along national lines. The place did not get to exist until Soviet times and was a mish mash of disparate cultural and religious groups. The bits will end up back where they were at the end of the 19th century and there will be a small, rump Ukraine. How long that will take is hard to figure but the forces are building within the country. It isn't just about the eastern regions.

When the end comes it will become obvious that the Russian proposals for a form of federalisation were the best and most practical. The Russian Federation does have *some* experience of this after all. :)
Allow and encourage the differences and foster and grow the similarities so that the societies that form the state of Ukraine can enjoy their own cultural elements while, at the same time, sharing those things that they hold in common.

Sadly, it is too late for that now and the easiest way for the regions to satisfy their desires is to rejoin the states and cultures that they were split from over the past century or so. Whether that's accomplished peaceably or with violence is a choice for the Kievan regime.
...everything ends always well; if it’s still bad, then it’s not the end!

There are no ethnic lines by which "Ukrainians" and "Russians" can be separated. Wikipedia State Dept approved propaganda is hardly a source.
