Montenegro to NATO?
« on: March 15, 2017, 04:12:03 PM »
John McCain has lost his mind (again)
I will ask our departed Monte member to comment on this since she probably
knows more about the local situation.

John McCain: Rand Paul ‘Is Now Working for Vladimir Putin
After the Kentucky senator objected to a bill advancing Montenegro’s push for NATO membership, McCain lost his cool and accused his colleague of being a Putin operative.

In McCain's geriatric Alzheimer's infected mind anyone not pushing for a conflict with Russia must be a "Putin operative".

Stoltenberg: Attempted coup in Montenegro – argument for NATO membership

Stoltenberg pointened out that NATO has helped to keep the peace in the Western Balkans for over 20 years.

“We will continue to be a guarantor of peace and stability in the region. Because it is important for our own security,” he said.

Secretary Genearl added that they will continue to support efforts for the Euro-Atlantic integration of the Western Balkans because that is key to stability and prosperity, in the region and beyond.

I will ask our departed Monte member to comment on this since she probably

Hi there! Departed?! Moi???  ??? I was merely taking a necessary break!

Btw, i think it's cool you've asked me about opinion, albeit i don't recall i knew a member with such a seductive username  :whistleinnoc:

Anyways. The majority, me among them, are pro-NATO. Some are against. If speaking objectively (, а не только с высоты своей колокольни) those of us who think it's a good idea - see many pro-; those of us who are against (the membership) see many contra-arguments.
Btw, the choice has hardly anything to do (at least for us) with alleged Russian geo-political interest in the region. We have our own "thing" going on for centuries (with neighboring countries.)

Once upon a time, when Slavic (religious -linguistic) connection was still strong and we had a mutual enemy (Ottoman Empire), Russia and Monte used to be allies. But we liberated ourselves from Turks, without waiting for 'foreign intervention'. Fast forward to WWII. Unlike the countries who used to be in a ex-Soviet block, once again, we fought and liberated ourselves on our own. Russians were not "освободители" for us, just allies. Thus, they did not have the base to install their rule, like they did in other Eastern-European countries. It's common knowledge, that - with due respect - except probably in Bulgaria, that rule was hated and considered tyrannical (in Hungary, Czechoslovakia, "Eastern Germany".) Hardly anyone in those countries felt sorry when Soviet Union fell apart and Russians went home. As per former Yugoslavia: in 1948 there was the historical fall out of two Josephs - Tito vs Stalin. It's back then that was decided not to associate interests of this region with Mother Russia. Nothing has changed since then. We have radical right parties whom noone take seriously which are funded from Russian sources. I believe it's normal (common?), it's called lobbing in English-speaking world. They lobby for Russian interests, but they are not doing a good work (judgement of their work comes form my own experience in lobbing, albeit in very different sphere.)
We have big Russian diaspora here. They are welcomed and their rights are respected (you can find sources in Russian - bulletins and social media posts by their community and read yourselves.)
Politics aside, common, average Montenegrin (like myself) still has warm feelings towards Russians. It's "irrational", could be "genetic memory" of the times of centuries ago when being of the same religion(Christian Orthodox), we used to pray together in the same language (Old Church Slavonic.) We used to consider each other as brothers. At least 300y passed. It's 5 or 6 generations since then. We are still related, but an extended family by now and our interest differ. Something like that.  :)

p.s. I forgot to add: contemporary Montenegro is a different country than it used to be some centuries ago - both geographically and ethnically. What i wrote above (re. historical connections) is true of many Montenegrins who are Christian Orthodox, but at least 30% of us are not, we belong to ethnic and religious minorities and feel connection to our own "исторические Родины" - for many it's Turkey, for some - it's Albania, for some - Croatia, Italy and, last but not the least, Israel.  Peace out.

Thank you, Tom!

You really did me a favor with this information. My father, who is elderly, is very keen on us joining NATO. So, i passed him the information as soon as i read it here (got to their place, woke him up to tell him  ;D). He was so happy! Called all his friends (at 5 am!!!  ;D) You made an elderly gentleman and his only daughter happy, thank you for that, my friend  :)

Volshe, stay safe!! senile warmonger John McCain is in Monte and who knows
who he will want to pick a fight with.  ;D

John McCain visits Montenegro

McCain has recently come into the focus of interest of Montenegrin public
because he strongly supports Montenegro’s accession to NATO. Speaking
in the US Senate, he has recently said that Montenegro is under significant
pressure and even attack from Russia and pointed out that the US must
urgently confirm Montenegro’s membership in NATO.

“The Russians tried a coup in Montenegro. They wanted to kill the prime
minister and overthrow the government in order to keep Montenegro from
becoming a part of NATO,” McCain said pointing out that the US should send
clear message to Russia that it won’t have veto power over NATO enlargement
decisions.
