Moscow area - unusual tourist destinations?

I may have the opportunity to visit Russia again. I've not been to Moscow in a while.
My visit could be in fall 2017. I plan to be there for a week.

What are the more off beaten paths to visit in/near Moscow? I like interesting museums and unusual architecture. I would prefer use only public transportation during my visit.
