Oho, got all 'excited' - until I saw

1/ Applies to Minsk airport only

2/ NOT if routing via Minsk to / from  Russia... as they are considered domestic flights - so no border controls..

Not helpful for those VISA nationals seeking to transit to from / Russia :(

This could be an interesting development...

http://president.gov.by/en/news_en/view/belarus-introduces-five-day-visa-free-regime-for-citizens-of-80-states-15344/

Interesting if correct.

It is indeed correct. We had the father-in-law on the blower yesterday, sharing the news. I thanked him for sharing but said it was a pity it was their turn to come to us!  :)

5 days is better than paying for a visa. But, I would prefer a 14 day visa. I could see more of the country.

:)

It didn't say anything about transit out. I wonder if you can leave out by train? Or, if you must leave out the same way you came in?

And I agree with Manny. There seem to be some loopholes - how do you prove 10,000 Euro insurance? In USA all we carry is an insurance card.

Insurance will probably be purchased at the airport on arrival. Chances are that external insurance will not suffice or will be very hard to demonstrate compliance with Belarusian requirements. €10,000 of cover is miniscule so my guess is that this will prove to be a form of entry tax.
...everything ends always well; if it’s still bad, then it’s not the end!

Tom, the article says traveling from Belarus to Russia is only legal by air and with a Russian visa?  How is it illegal to cross into Russia from Belarus by train with a Belarusian and Russian visa?  Belarus even offers a 48 hour transit visa if traveling by train.  In the transit visa application you must note which country you are traveling from and to.  For example from Poland to Russia, would obviously warrant a transit through Belarusian territory.  Or from Ukraine to Lithuania.

It isn't ..One arrivex by air - collecting the BL visa, then onward by overground transport...

Going back this way after five days would be difficult - unless getting another BL visa at Moscow

What is interesting is why 'Lukashouldgo' has done it.. ? Money?

Now entering Ru without a visa and being checked is much easier..

He may find that Moscow realises this and it will be quietly dropped - if it means increased border security with Ru..

Has anyone tried visa free travel to Belarus yet? I've been considering A possible stop in Minsk, should I decide to jump back into FSUW dating.

The article's author can hardly be relied upon - if his info re UK 'registration' requirements are anything to go by. Completely false info.

I know of someone who used this system to visit BL last month to visit a lady - he will be going again - but next time with an invitation visa.

We had the pleasure of using the 5 day visa free window back in May this year. No problems at all and as Andrew suggested above, we did have to buy insurance at the airport. I recall it was about £5 per person or thereabouts.

My folks visited for the first time and absolutely loved Minsk. They plan on returning soon with some friends for a long weekend, rather than stomach the Euro capitals and all the crap that goes with it.

Great hotels, bars, restaurants, plenty to do and see all whilst being safe from terrorists and thieves. Your money also goes pretty far.

What's it like as from the recent videos I've seen it looks rather dead in Minsk, like there is noone there at all which is strange, unless the videos were taken at odd times during the day or is it really that empty?

I know what you mean.

Through the day like any city, it’s always really busy. In the evening, I’ve walked through the centre and it can feel quite quiet. That’s not a bad thing though and can make for a pleasant summer walk.

The centres nearly all newish buildings with wide roads, no litter and very clean. Most people working in the center will live in the suburbs so in the evening those on lower wages won’t be in the city unless they’re hanging out in the parks.

Don’t be fooled by the quiet appearance though. All the good bars, restaurants and music venues are always busy and booking ahead is advisable. Plenty girls too.

I'll add it to the list of places to visit, especially as I understand it's still in the Soviet state and it's probably one of the few areas to go to see much of it still in action today, even if under a different guise. I do hope it is actually busy in bars and the like, would hate to be the only sod there :GRRRR:

If you find yourself sitting in a bar with no girls to entertain, you’re most definitely in the wrong place. It’s a capital city with plenty quality venues.

I never noticed as many Turks last time but there were always plenty blokes coming through immigration, looking for a good time. My wife and some of her friends had absolutely no time for them and saw them as pushy sex tourists.

Others embraced it. I recall going out for dinner one night to an expensive restaurant and there were three Turkish blokes entertaining about 5 or 6 much younger girls. Where there’s money being thrown about and all that.

It was one of the guys birthdays and they were sitting not too far from us. They would look at me and give me the eyes as though I were having fun fishing in the same pond. They sent some champagne & birthday cake over to our table and I remember wanting to send it back.

Mrs Rosco suggested it would be very rude and in the end, the guys were actually decent enough.

Not a single one of my hundreds of Ukrainian friends and family (from all over the center/centre, north, south and east) could give a toss how you spell Kiev/Kiev.
We don't need spelling nazis here do we?? I don't care that North Americans can't spell english words either

How it is spelt is most important to many ..

Kiev

http://www.infoukes.com/faq/Kiev-2/

or Kiev

https://wikitravel.org/en/Kiev

A little like someone - like me - over 10 years ago ( use of 'The' Ukraine ) ..

In an era when UA is pushing it's own language - the continued use of the RU transliterated version is either ignorant or making a point...
