Depends, like any nation - it has places tourists may be should stay away from - Dagestan - for example ... I'm sure the people are great - but there are folks who seek cessation from the RF  - and there's the occasional shoot out / bomb

I certainly don't feel unsafe walking the streets in Sochi or most any RU city.  This is a family time.
