Steve, I think it is simpler than that. He chooses to lie, much as moby does, to garner attention to himself.

I don't think it is possible to be sentient and at the same time to only pursue counterfactual ideas and arguments in the course of a discourse where the protagonists usually, but not always, are learning through that discourse. I mean, I learn stuff all the time, I think you do, as do most people. Ant and one other that I can immediately think of seem show that they do not learn anything. I don't think that it is possible to not learn and thus ascribe a less creditable reason for their apparent lack of ability.
