Russia flies planes near the US all the time. The gulf of Mexico, east and west cost. Not only that they get permission and it is granted to fly their spy planes over the USA. So why the rough treatment? If they keep this up they will not longer get this type of permission and harsher treatment near the USA.

The Open Skies Treaty, to which both Russia and the US are signatories is a treaty under which signatories can arrange to fly over the territory of other signatories using agreed planes, with agreed surveillance techniques, on an agreed flight path at an agreed time accompanied by personnel of the overflown state. Whilst various signatories have, from time to time, been less than completely cooperative the system works well enough.

What is happening now near to Russian territory is not the same thing at all and is not part of the Open Skies Treaty. When nations act as the US is doing it is entirely normal for those in the region being surveilled to intercept and harry the incoming aircraft, or ships. We hear more about it right now because the US is doing two things (and it is mainly, but far from exclusively, the US doing so) they are increasingly flying and sailing in close proximity to the shorelines and airspace of countries such as Russia and China and, in order to justify such activity as being a 'response to hostility' from the Russians, in particular, they are complaining about the entirely routine actions of the Russian air force, in particular. It would seem that the intent is to provide some kind of justification to US mushrooms (consumers if US mass news/entertainment media) for the actions of the US armed services in the borders of the Russian Federation.

I'm wondering, if in todays age and with todays technology, the continental-borders at sea are sufficient.

Most missiles cross those borders in seconds today, and not 1-2 hours like when these laws were drafted.

The whole point of them, was to give ample warning to the commanders that they were being attacked, and could perhaps rally a defense before the aggressors hit them.

Nowadays, that point is moot.

I read something earlier today whereby Russia responded to the barrel roll incident by telling the US to either turn on the aircraft transponders so they can identify the planes approaching their airspace or keep away.

Sounds pretty logical and these small details make a big difference to the tabloid bull shit.
