Not a big movie watcher these days.

My hard drives are full of unwatched stuff that'll probably never be seen (at least not by me).

I think my working style is similar to yours, but I only have two screens (and maybe a tablet) on the go. ;)

So, binge watching of series is the thing for me - as you are doing.

BitTorrent and Plex FTW!

Just re-done Peep Show, series 1-9, 22hrs, 2mins! Not in one sitting obvs. Benefit is being of a certain age by series 4 I've forgotten what happened in series 1 so when I've done series 9 and rewatch series 1 like i've never seen it!

Peep Show is class, unlike the US version which totally sucks carpet......

I usually watch 3 movies a day

I don't watch much telly, but some things I can watch again and again.

These are well worth a watch:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Cards_(UK_TV_series) (Not the one you think - this one is from the 90's)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nice_Work_(TV_Drama)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_on_Mars_(UK_TV_series) - and the sequel https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashes_to_Ashes_(TV_series)

(Means more to Mancunians as it was shot in streets many know)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boss_(TV_series)

(Proper American TV)

The UK market doesn't get too many subtitled French films (the non English speaking films are niche), but the Russian market does. On a cruise over New Year, wifey and I watched a few French films she said were 'classics', I had never heard of. They were all actually *really* good, despite the subtitles. Lots of geezers looking poignant, gazing out of windows smoking a Gitanne. Plenty of lithe birds, way too young for the older geezers, having angst over a doomed relationship (The French love all that). Sounds really cheesy, but I enjoyed them. If your Russian speaking woman suggests a French film, give it a shot. You might be surprised.......

'Breaking Bad' best TV series ever. The prequel's 'Better Call Saul' second season is about to start in a few weeks.

'Downton Abbey' and 'Madmen' where pretty good but a little slow in comparison to the two above.

Andrew, you should watch 'One Flew Over the Coo Coo's Nest.' Like the 'Shawshank Redemption' another truly intelligent film. Also a good film is 'Cast Away.' All three of these films are about captivity and effort to break free. Many of us find ourselves in our own kind of prison. But most don't know it.

Watched Eine Frau in Berlin/A Woman in Berlin/Безымянная - одна женщина в Берлине - very harrowing film about the Soviet Army in Berlin in 1945 systematically gang raping almost every woman in Berlin.

Here's the book the film was made from;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Woman_in_Berlin

I've no subtitles, German bits in German and Russian bits in Russian, followed most of it. the Mrs described the movie to her mum, who said that never happened, anyone else noticed this from their FSU family, a sort of automatic denial of any Russian/Soviet wrongdoing at anytime anywhere?

I'm as patriotic as anyone, but I'm not blind as to what the UK etc has done in the past, a lot of good, a lot of bad too. It's the 100% denial that makes any sort of debate impossible, as we see on here.

Was there a some kind of baby boom in Berlin 9 or 10 months after the end of WW2 in Europe? I do not recall seeing any such evidence.
Yes, not all rapes are full sex, but from what I understand, usually, when rape is carried out as a punishment or shaming, following military defeat, babies are actually a desired output.

I'd be very surprised if there was not quite a lot of raping going on. I'd also expect that there was an awful lot of consensual, pragmatic coupling going on, just as happened in the UK, France, Italy etc, etc. It sure as hell happened in the rest of Germany after the war.

Seems the crux of the movie is the focus on the liaisons formed by the more attractive German women with Soviets to tolerate the situation, either that or just get raped willy nilly if you pardon the expression.

It's a shite state of affairs to be in anyway, largely defensive young women albeit probably still glowing under Hitler's magic, faced with let's face it, uneducated peasants without even basic toilet skills that formed the common Soviet Soldiery, if Beavors books on the subject are to be believed.

It's unusual too as the winners generally paint the picture - here the loser does.

I might be wrong but I think I read there was a large batch of German visas issued to those born from Sovo-German alliances after the war, that could prove a child born to a German mother.

So,  as I noted,  not any great difference between the Russian situation and any other invader,  including the over paid,  over seed and over here Yanks in the UK during WW2.

That it happens is a 'bad thing' but it is what happens when a victor takes power. It happens today and while we don't want to talk about it,  it will continue to happen.

In a way it us analogous to the underlying process of sex tourism. Power,  whether economic or physical takes its reward from, usually,  women in terms of sexual conquest. The power inequality is the significant factor. Of course there's a signal to the defeated men,  which is why babies are important. You want to remind the defeated people,  for many years, of that defeat. What better way than with kids that were not fathered by the defeated men. An ongoing reminder of that defeat.

Just a thought but might that be a reason why there's a certain slice of middle aged American men who want to get a wife from a 'defeated' rival? A spoil of war? And why,  when it was still a viable industry local men either reacted very badly to 'invading' wife hunters or conspired to rip them off - increasing the cost of acquisition for those invaders as a way to salve the psychic wounds?
...everything ends always well; if it’s still bad, then it’s not the end!

I'd say a movie I am thinking (watched several times) often is for women, probably, but nevertheless very good.
I mean Thérèse Desqueyroux,  a 2012 French drama film directed by Claude Miller  with Audrey Tautou in the main role.
In the late 1920s Thérèse Laroque agrees to a marriage of convenience and we may witness
all the consequences of this marriage of absolutely different souls and minds.

As to me Audrey Tautou is brilliant here.
Livet är fullt av ironier.

Check out the abortions performed..

It is was illegal in the DDR to denigrate ti USSR and it's illegal to denigrate the USSR's war efforts under Russian Federal law..... fines and up to five years in prison.

Few doubt the Nazis treated the Soviet people with disdain ..they were indoctrinated that the Soviets had plans to wipe them out ...
