Wine
« on: February 24, 2015, 11:30:07 AM »
Chris started a thread on FSU wines, but a recent post about French wines made think there might be some interest in a more general thread on members' favorite wines.  Here go just a few of mine to start the thread off:

American reds:

My favorites are the Cabernet Sauvignons, such as Jordan, Louis M. Martini, and Chateau Souverain. I also like the Robert Mondavi Cabernet. One of the most pleasant evenings of my life (that did not involve a FSUW) was spent at dinner at the Robert Mondavi Winery. There is a lovely restaurant there that is right next to where the grapes are grown.

Beaulieu Vineyard produces good red wines at reasonable prices. My favorites are their Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.

I also like Zinfandels, such as Ridge or Chateau Montelena. I should probably point out that I'm talking about a proper red zinfandel, not the sickly sweet white zinfandel that is popular here. For a long time it was a mystery where the zinfandel grape originated, but recent investigation has revealed that it came from Croatia and was brought to California in the early 19th century.

American whites:

Chardonnay, two of my favorites are Freemark Abbey and Chateau St. Jean

Hungarian:

The first Hungarian wine I ever tried is still my favorite: Grey Friar of Badacsony, which you might see as Badacsony Szurkebarat, from the Lake Balaton region. Thank you Dr. Racz for introducing it to us.

French:

As for reds, I like either a good Bordeaux or Burgundy, but the better ones have become more pricey in recent years. White Burgundies, which I used to love have also become fairly pricey (Meursault is a particular favorite), so I generally have a Muscadet from the Loire Valley.  Sèvre et Maine is the Muscadet most easily found at wine shops here.

Portuguese:

In the Summer my favorite drink for dining al fresco is a humble and inexpensive bottle of Vinho Verde

After dinner a glass of Port is excellent. Winston Churchill once said, "Port is the brother of cheese".

Spanish:

A good Rioja.
Any good Sherry. I usually drink an Amontillado.

Champagne and other sparkling wine:

My favorite is Veuve Clicquot, but I will happily drink a Spanish cava.

South America:

I'm partial to Argentine and Chilean reds, such as Malbec or Cabernet Sauvignon. I've never tried an Argentine white that I particularly liked.

Australia:

Australia produces many excellent wines but I haven't had any in years. The only Australian wine that I can remember is a good Port, Clocktower, from the Yalumba Valley. It's a great value.

I'm quite sure that I've forgotten many, but this will, I hope, kick the thread off.

What are your favorite wines?

I just posted elsewhere on the forum, i love our "black wine" http://www.wine-searcher.com/regions-montenegro

Hungarian Tokayi has emotional value for me, love it too, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokaji

also Tuscan and Californian white wines and Chilean and Argentine red ones.

Great thread, Chris!  I love Georgian wines, but it's seldom that i get the possibility to enjoy them (which is, hardly ever, outside of Russia and outside of whatever i fetch from the Duty Free,  as these are the very wines i get for my family :))

edited i remembered i got Georgian wines at other airports too, where i was in transit, outside Russia... now if only i could remember where was that  :king:

Observing Passover Seder (traditional/ritual dinner) and gulping on 4 would be tad problematic with you then  ;D

I really do not like wine but will drink it occasionally.  The one wine we do buy is SIMI cabernet sauvignon.

SIMI valley is in California.  The wine has no artificial sulfids added to it.

I thought we had a similar thread on here somewhere?

Champansky I am with Larry on the Veuve Cliquot (either yellow label or Grand Dame).

Reds I like something not so full bodied. More along the lines of a pinot noir, shiraz, merlot, or red zinfandel. Regions of choice for reds are Argentina, Chile (Casillero del Diablo) and California. The North Coast region of Cali has been good to us, especially wines from Russian River Valley and Napa.

Whites we prefer something light and crisp like a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio (Santa Margherita). We really enjoy whites from Washington State. They are putting out some top notch wines lately. Chateau Ste Michelle is a good example.

Reds from France and Italy have been really hit or miss for me. Maybe a cheap bottle of Beaujolais Villages or Beaujolais Nouveau or a bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape if I can splurge.

What is a pure Malbec?  I thought the very nature of Malbec was that it was a blend.  I ask as a point of interest really because I am a true fan of Malbecs, especially those from Argentina and Chile.

I also love a pure Chianti.

Cheers.

How did they get around the Federal regulation?  I thought the US mandated the addition of sulfides to all locally made wines?  This is why I don't drink them TBH.

a Muscadet from the Loire Valley.

I wasn't big on Muscadet until I tried one in a restaurant called La Buissonniere in France recently. Now I like it.

I prefer white generally actually, a nice French Sancerre, Viognier or Pouilly Fume* will do nicely. Failing that, something dry and decent like a Pino Grigio from Italy/Sicily will do.

Oz and NZ stuff is popular here, but most is not to my taste with the exception of Yellow Tail from Oz which is nice for the money (I also found that brand in the US).

We don't find so much American stuff here (being next to France there is little demand) but once one moves away from the nasty supermarket stuff, what reaches here is not bad from there. The local market stuff in the US I found alright too.

We were in London recently for the night visiting the Russian embassy (as you do). We stayed in Chelsea Harbour. I decided to splurge on a bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape @ circa £40 ($60). Strong money but it was nice glug.
