Kazan is one of the most historically interesting places in Russia. I would really like to visit but will have to probably settle on seeing Peter.

I wonder about the gold onion domes in reply #2. Kazan is not far from Samara/Togliatti (indeed the same plane from Moscow I have been on a few times serves both). Samara/Togliatti is on the cusp of 'Muslim' Russia and Kazan is in neighboring Tatarstan.

Here is a photo I took in Samara:

Here again we see the gold onion domes. Maybe I had my eyes closed and someone will correct me, but I don't recall gold onion domes anywhere else I went in Russia or the FSU apart from that bit of central Russia.

Can anyone expand on that?

Kazan is where Natalya was from on BBC World Weddings, a documentary about international relationships - she married DJ Ray Heim from Long Island - did a quick Google - got this - got the show somewhere but so much stuff I have now....

http://www.standard.co.uk/showbiz/world-weddings-dj-rays-big-day-6945000.html

Anyway, Kazan didn't look so wonderful in the shots they showed on that programme. Neither did Long Island to fair...

Cracking show cos when she got to USA he showed her the dishwasher etc and she goes all soppy 'oh your dishwasher' and says like 'it's your dishwasher now, not my dishwasher anymore....'.

Marriage made Heaven....

I took the first photo in Novosibirsk; the second I didn't take, but it's a photo from Yaroslavl I believe.  However, I have no idea what the significance of the golden onion domes is, and It's too late now to hit google.  :chuckle:

My wife was an art/architect historian.  It is not uncommon to see gold domes anywhere in Russia.

I believe I saw two or three churches in Odessa with gold domes as well. Not my photo below, but great pic taken in Odessa.

The gold topped cathedrals and even smaller churches are rather common and one seems to overlook them.

A acquiantance worked on the restored Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Kamenets-Podolsky and it is partial gold covered. St. Andrew's church which is in Kiev and major example of Ukraine Baroque style is restored and it has allot of gold trim on the domes. The Pechersk Lavra here is also gold covered as are parts of St. Sophia. I remember seeing other churches covered in gold across Ukraine they are more common than one thinks.
