Russian melons
« on: August 22, 2014, 09:12:13 AM »
There's no food as satisfying on a hot August day as a slice of watermelon.  Both Russians and Americans like it. The food highlight of most of my trips to FSU has been the fruits, vegetables, honey, and similar things.  I recently came across a couple of news stories about watermelons in Russia so I decided to write this thread on melons.

Quote
Now watermelons are in season in Russia and are pretty popular as a street selling food. The shop owners sometimes build such fenced storages right in the middle of the city to lock the fruit in overnight. The mesh fences don’t allow the watermelons be stolen. At least this was their purpose. However, as reported, homeless people have found their way to the sweet fruit: they use a knife to cut pieces of the fruit the exact same size as the squares in the mesh fence, then just pull it out and eat it. This way, watermelons get those red spots all over the storage.

Russian rich fancy cubic watermelons

MOSCOW – Cubic watermelons grown in plastic containers in Kagawa Prefecture are catching on among wealthy Russians, where they are selling for 28,000 rubles (about $856) apiece at a luxury supermarket in Moscow.

Recent media coverage has boosted their popularity, with the price rising by 5,000 rubles in a few days, the Interfax news agency reported Sunday.

Russian Mass Brawl Over Watermelons Ends in Gunshots

The usually festive summer watermelon season has taken on a violent turn in Russia's Far East after heavy fighting between market vendors and customers over unripe watermelons resulted in the firing of gunshots.

The spat erupted on Thursday afternoon when vendors at the Mnogoryadov Market in Khabarovsk refused to refund their customers for reportedly having sold them immature watermelons, а statement published Friday on the regional Interior Ministry branch website said.

Unwilling to settle for a green watermelon, the dispute then took on a violent turn as friends joined in and a mass brawl erupted, ending with someone firing two shots from an OSA non-lethal gun, the statement said.

Three people with light injuries were in need of medical care, and those involved in the brawl were taken to the local police headquarters, the report said.

If found guilty of hooliganism, the rioters can face up to five years in prison.

I like watermelons from Astrakhan - they have rather thick skins but they are more sweet than watermelons from other areas
But "real" Astrakhan watermelon could be bought not earlier than later August-September

Wet round! Melons can be salt, marinate and cook.

Workpiece - the most ancient way of eating watermelon. Initially (in ancient Egypt) watermelons began to grow not because of the juicy pulp, but for seed. Of them squeezed oil, which was valued at a premium. In the East, where the berry came later, from watermelons prepared honey. Even in Russia, where the watermelon came only after accession and development of the southern lands, it is also not consumed raw, and soaked and salted. But there is evidence that at the king's table watermelon appeared earlier still under Peter I - on the royal dinners served pulp, soaked in sugar syrup.

The first indicator was my first pregnancy: barrel watermelon. Primary toxicosis I went along with the salty watermelon. Thanks to her husband.  ;D

I agree with you, Annushka.
Those watermelons are excellent.
But now I think that the best melons are from Mexico.
Mmmmmmm....... They are delicious!!
Also, I cannot imagine melon with seeds.
Hard to believe that I ate them in Russia!

I don't think I had a seedless watermelon until I was an adult.  But it is nice to eat one without bothering about the seeds.

Oh, I see what you mean.  That hadn't occurred to me when I wrote the thread title, probably because my mind is more wholesome than yours.  :chuckle:  And I even put the thread in the Culinary section and not the Booby section.

Anna Vyalitsyna is absolutely beautiful.  Thanks for bringing her to our attention.

Like many countries, it has various regions..
both good and bad.

its a truly beautiful place, and you shouldn't avoid it ;)
I can not recall just how many times i've been there..but it was always a fantastic time and beautiful and varied scenery.
Orchid, I thought you'd appreciate photos..
I simply can't sit along this island beach, and not smile.

the water is crystal clear, the *fog* is simply from different water temperatures..as you swim thru it clears completely..
 i can't recall what fish i was pointing out..below ;)

many under ground rivers and caves to snorkel or dive in as well..this one you can swim a few kilometers thru and drops you into the Caribbean sea near a beautiful beach ;)

I second this...

I love the smaller Russian melons as they are sweeter....although I have never actually eaten one.  :evilgrin0002:
