This is something I am into as well having traced our family and now into the genetic side of things. My father worked with Sorenson on several projects years ago so I find it fascinating.

I am very interested in this as well. One half of my family I can trace no further back than Ireland, but the other half has some interesting quirks in it, Dutch and German was one bit, and some of the family were, we believe Russian Jews who came to Manchester during the industrial revolution and became hatters, and one in my mother's memory was a Russian and an Arabic speaker (nobody knew so much about him).

My wife has one trait unusual here in that despite being very pale skinned and not naturally dark haired, she tans quite dark in double quick time - like two days to get the tan that would take most people weeks. I always assumed that was due to eastern/asian genetic element somewhere. Most British/northern Europeans with pale skin/fair hair tend to just go red and burn. She also has sectoral heterochromia (a bit of different colour in her eyes) that my grandmother also had.

I have blue eyes (from my mother, and her Dad), as do my kids, and there is a lot of interesting reading out there on the genetics of that too. Most of that points to northern europe and Russian Jews (it is said 99% of people in Estonia have blue eyes). Blue eyes are decreasing in America I read.

I'd be very interested to get us both genetic tests. I imagine its an area full of scammers, so if anyone can recommend a proper outfit and give a guide on pricing?

National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Robert Ballard, best known for his discovery of the R.M.S. Titanic, thought he knew everything about his ancestry, with a genealogy that traces back to the British Isles and Holland. While most of his DNA agrees with this story, he learned something unexpected from his Geno 2.0 results—his genome is about 2% Oceanian, connecting him to the first seafarers who settled the islands off the coast of southeast Asia around 50,000 years ago, probably via the Dutch side of his family.

The Journey of Man: A Genetic Odyssey

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spencer_Wells

He wrote the book The Journey of Man: A Genetic Odyssey (2002),[2] which explains how genetic data has been used to trace human migrations over the past 50,000 years, when modern humans first migrated outside of Africa. According to Wells, one group took a southern route and populated southern India and southeast Asia, then Australia. The other group, accounting for 90% of the world's non-African population (some 5.4 billion people as of 2014), took a northern route, eventually peopling most of Eurasia (largely displacing the aboriginals in southern India, Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia in the process), North Africa and the Americas. Wells also wrote and presented the 2003 PBS/National Geographic documentary of the same name. By analyzing DNA from people in all regions of the world, Wells has concluded that all humans alive today are descended from a single man who lived in Africa around 60,000 – 90,000 years ago, a man also known as Y-chromosomal Adam.[3]

l4l, not one of RUA's deeper thinkers, are you? As I mentioned before in some other thread. Some anthropological studies say we all originated in Africa which would mean no matter what we look like on the outside we're all black African.

The media refers to Woods as black, how he fills out his American census I don't know. The Canadian government doesn't ask such questions or at least none of the forms I've filled out have ever asked such questions.

The color has to do with where you ended up after leaving the continent...or staying.  At least that is what I have read on the subject.

My understanding is, and of course this is only my interpretation of the science so it might be wrong, that it took tens of thousands of years for skin colour change after moving to Europe (Asia, etc) untold tens of thousands of years ago.

Personally I've always liked that idea that humanity is some sort of space alien-ancient human hybrid. It has something really cosmic about it. I also don't think it's a likely explanation of humanity's origins. But you never know.

That means I'm a subject matter expert on all things Russia, Ukraine and UK.

Everyone is forgetting about the 3-5% Neanderthal in some of you.

You can tell here on this site that some of you have more Neanderthal in you than some of us of purer Aryan blood. Yet still we all must make an effort to get long even with Westy with his crack pot theories of space alien human hybrids.

Humans are one of they very few animals that protect the weak.
95% people put in basic survival environment would do things they never thought they
were capable of.
There is nothing permanent except change.

National Geo only tests for 12 STR's on Y-DNA I believe so is pretty useless. I believe FTDNA does the testing for them in any case, just more comprehensive.

Someone mentioned the "out of Africa" theory in another thread but it makes more sense to here. Another finding that sinks that theory.

"Investigations at Happisburgh, UK, have revealed the oldest known hominin footprint surface outside Africa at between ca. 1 million and 0.78 million years ago"

I always viewed the "out of Africa" theory as being a feel-good theory, rather than one based on science.
