Bad Russian Spelling...
« on: June 21, 2014, 10:46:07 AM »
I was watching 2010 - The Year We Make Contact, the sequel to 2001 A Space Odyssey, and I saw this, I grabbed the screen. Surely it should say 'Teplovoy Ekran' not 'Teplovoi Zkran'? I reckon it means 'Heat Shield', graphic is a dead give away and I do enough enough Russian to fill in the gaps lol!

Yeah I know lol! I just spotted it straight away and that sent me off on all sorts of screen dumping the bits showing Russian, in this movie a lot of it on the spaceship (Leonov) looks totally random like they picked words that just looked cool....

Google says heat shield translates as тепловой экран. Probably should let Halo, Mendy or one of the native speakers look at the photo to see if it's correct.

Edit: Just did a quick check on websites about mistakes in movies and while there were numerous mistakes in 2010, the language typo wasn't mentioned. However 2010 is an old movie and not popular outside of its niche audience.

No, Ste is correct.  The Russians took écran from the French.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

So it is a mistake in the movie, Halo? I just want to go 'Yess!' - personal pride!

I knew it was wrong because I remembered those huge ground effect boats/planes the Soviets built for use on the Black Sea, and I remembered the word 'Ekranoplan' not quite sure how that fits in with 'shield' but I think I get the logic, these things used ground effect I think to more or less fly/hover about 2/3 meters over the lake/sea with great speed and economy...

From Wikipedia, which can be wrong, but this seems correct..

экранопла́н, экран "screen" + план "plane", from эффект экрана, literally in Russian "screen effect"

Yes, it is a mistake.  The "э" was not not right, the middle needed to be longer, and uncurved.

Not necessarily. Depends on the font graphics.

According to this picture TEПЛОВОЙ ЭКРАН is a magnetic field that protects space ship from heat when it goes through air on a way back to the earth.
It also can protect that ship from particles and rays in space.
On this picture it is written Зкран(Zkran ) instead of Экран(Ekran).
You must be a foreigner to notice the difference. If not for you, I would not notice.
If you see difference between these two words, you can be really proud of yourself!!!

Thanks!

It was the Z and K next to each other whilst I'm sure it happens in Russian, it seem to jar so I paused and captured it.

There's actually a Russian thing called an ekranoplan. In English we'd call it a ground effect vehicle.
