Important dates

There are some important days, many are not official holidays, that we just can't miss and I'll flesh some of them out as time permits.

Past the celebration of the New Year, Christmas, and the Old New Year is the Epiphany. That is when you see all those folk standing out in the cold and plunging into icy waters.

SO far I have learned with my wife, that March 8th and her birthday, are two days I should not forget. ALthough she is starting to take a real liking  too, our version of Christmas.
I am sure once here full time, Valentines will make it on her list as well.
She loves flowers and decorating the house for events, soooo.

If anyone is married to, or dating a woman with the name of Tatiana, Tatyana, Tanya or any other form of the name, it would be best not to forget January 25th as I recently learned the hard way.  :duh:

Today, 22 February, is what Eastern Christians call "Meatfare Saturday/Memorial Sunday" and is a time to remember those departed from this life with prayers for their souls. Even those who might not call themselves as practicing Orthodox often treat this weekend as special in honour of their departed relatives and friends.

Patriarch Kirill issued this statement especially on behalf of those who have died in the protests in Kiev:

We wholeheartedly mourn the dead, seek compassion for their families, urge sharing
help for the wounded and I ask pastors and children of the Holy Orthodox Church to raise
prayers to the Lord Jesus Christ and His Blessed Mother.

Let us pray for the repose of our dead brothers and sisters, the healing of the sick and wounded,
and with fierce hearts pray for an end to discord and confusion in
Ukraine. We pray that the Lord will reveal to all of us the spirit of love, peace,
forgiveness and brotherly love in Christ!

Today is 23 February, celebrated as the Day of Protector of the Fatherland, honouring all the military services.

With compulsory draft, this day pretty much covers every male. It is appropriate to honour older veterans, both male and female, too.

Here is a unique cake, the left hand side is for the guy (23 Feb) and the right side for the gal (8 March):

February 24: Maslenitsa

(From the Mendeleyev Journal)

The Russian term is Масленица and it is observed the week prior to the Orthodox Fast leading to Easter. Often it is called pancake week or butter week by some.

The observance of Maslenitsa is an tradition of Eastern Slavs that is celebrated during the last week before Great Lent, marking the seventh week before Orthodox Easter. The roots of Maslenitsa are in pagan traditions as the celebration of the coming end of winter.

For Orthodox Christians, meat along with eggs and all dairy products are forbidden during the Fast. Maslenitsa is the last week during which milk, cheese and other dairy products, eggs, and cooking oil are permitted. Maslenitsa week meals will be meat-less but plenty of foods with dairy and eggs will be served.

The week is symbolized by blini, Russian styled thin pancakes similar to crepes.

The last day of Maslenitsa Week is called "Forgiveness Sunday" and it is the traditional day for people to ask their family and friends for forgiveness, hoping to hear the words “God will forgive” in response.

The week leading up to the begin of the 40 days before Easter (Lent) in Germany/Austrian and parts of Switzerland if I am not mistaken is called "fasching"

In large parts of the world we know this week as "Carnaval"

What is unusual (but not unknown) is the Eastern Orthodox Eastern and the Western Protestant/Catholic Easter occur on the same date this year. A week latter is Passover.

For the lazy Easter is 20 April this year.

Shakey in a separate thread tried to salute those who served yesterday.  tiphat

2014 is one of those relative rare years when the two are celebrated the same, 20 April.

Saturday was the end of what is commonly called Масленица or "pancake week" and today is the Sunday of forgiveness. It is common to ask everyone in your life to forgive you for any wrong or slight you've committed since last year.

The name given is "Forgiveness Sunday" and the term Простите (pra-ste-tye) is a simple way to say "forgive me." Even better is Прости меня and even if you are unaware of any hurts you've caused, you should speak this anyway today.

My mother in law has just suffered a stroke and so you may not see me around as frequently in the near term. We're hoping and praying for a full recovery.

Простите.

Lest we forget, 8 March was also the date when the Tsar and his family were arrested by the interim revolutionary government.

17 April will be the day to honour firemen in Russia. Go out and start a fire--keep good men and women employed.  :chuckle:
