And if people do it for free, just for fun, what kind of characters do you think they will attract? Well, we saw already on other programmes didn't we?

If they want credible people know know their eggs, those people wont work for free. Catch 22......

No, that is a different matter, if you want to be hired as a consultant then that is a different case and, probably, they need consultants about as much as I need a bad case of piles. These guys want 'witnesses' participants in the process.

Yes, if the only things we do are the things we get paid money for then we end up with sad and dreary lives.

While that may be true Andrew, lets get to the nitty gritty, what these people are actually after is information, information from people who have gone or are going through the process of getting married to a foreign lady and are willing to be filmed in the process, without that information they don't have a programme!  we all know and you probably better than most, (isn't that how you make a living) information is a valuable asset, and therefore costs money.

Personally it is highly unlikely I would ever go on a show like this no matter how much they offered me, and £2k is not even worthy of discussing the possibility. As someone else put it UT, what value do you put on humiliation!

Chirs, thanks, money is not an issue for you. You are attitudinally disinclined to participate and that is fine. Why would anyone argue with that choice?

Money would not change that attitude, at least not if you were honest with yourself.

Just a thought for you. When you watch the News at Ten, did you notice the cast list of actors at the end of the programme? Did you see the invitation to join the cast of the News at Ten?
No you didn't. They don't exist.
Documentary making is a part of journalism and I am sure that you get why authoritative journalism does not condone or involve payment to participants.

To save me a load of writing here's an article where the writer makes the points about NOT paying in a succinct manner: http://www.rosenblumtv.com/2012/02/should-you-pay-people-to-be-in-your-documentary/
The writer Michael Rosenblum is a trainer of documentary makers so we can probably understand that while you might disagree with him, he probably knows what he is talking about.

You might think so, but the Discovery Channel has been caught out before doing exactly that, (a number of times actually) hiring of actors for a documentary and fabricating evidence.

Would you be on the programme?

Of course he would, he is a narcissist. It would help inflate his self importance
and his expertise in all things in life. In addition he could put others down, further
enhancing his narcissist personality and need for attention at the expense of others.

Andrew would be perfect for the show except that he has never pursued a

be on the show for general purposes and adoration of self.

There has been a show or two  done by a CDN crew who followed some women to Africa and to some Muslim countries. It wasn't a shocking freak show of non paid cast members, just a few gals looking to find a guy. Watching it I had my doubts about the sincerity of one couple.
There is hope for this UK crew to do a normal broadcast, I highly doubt any US crew would do something that didn't cater to the ADD crowd.

Any idea when they plan to put it to air?

Please note that I was making a point about payment as it applies to people here. I posted a link to an article that makes clear the arguments for not paying folks. Feel free to disagree, that's fine.

Please also note that the documentary is made by a production company, their work has been commissioned by Discovery Channel and that is probably the case for other documentaries mentioned above.

Of course, we all know that just because something is done does not make it right that it be done.

Hey, Bill, how are you getting on with your obnoxious theories?

Bill, if you have a point to make please do so in an appropriate forum. You can have your fantasies and people here, including myself, are willing to let you indulge them from time to time. Please remember that the choice of any person to post or not post is their choice alone. Apart from the moderation team who can ban somebody nobody else makes any choices on behalf of anyone here in respect of participation.

Funny that different people get the blame for the same fantasy depending upon the time of the month and the current need for a scapegoat by some damaged person or other.

If this docu is looking for a "pop the question" and a wedding, then clearly they are not serious about this.
Everyone loves to watch a wedding and some middle aged exec prod is sitting in her office dictating what the show is to look like based on what gets ratings.

While this may make her production company some money, I very much doubt it will reflect anything of value about the business or the struggles we go through in search of a woman of quality.

That kind of docu would start with screening of men for interesting candidates and at least a year to follow them down all the dead ends and blind alleys. That would be a docu that men would want to watch.

When you get serious about this subject for a docu, please check back here.

Yes have had a couple of conversations with this guy, although i feel his intentions are fine, i spoke at length with him at doing it at the wrong time of year and over to short of time scale

The three couples we are working with  had no interest in this at all, as i believe most couples would be and this is what i had told him at the outset.

Factor in the ideal he wanted was to follow a couple getting married in this country and he was severely limiting his horizons.

Today is only one day in a life of happiness

Not all journalists agree with Andrew.

It seems like you are only looking at this from a "NEWS" point of view. The key word here is "Journalism". Documentarians are not journalists. Many specialists, scientists, or industry leaders have only one product to sell for their livelyhood and that product is their intellectual property.

Take the movie "What the Bleep do we know" for an example. Should all of these VIPs just donate their time when the finished product of the interviews netted over $10 million? I think not.

As I stated before, if it's part of a product being created as a money making venture, payment is very proper.

I fully agree that one should never pay for an unbiased news story. News is news and docs is docs.

Lonedrake, while you might be correct about SOME people who make documentaries the guy who wrote the article I linked above is a documentary maker who does NOT agree with payment and I'd bet that a large number of the filmmakers he has trained wouldn't either.

Is always a bit of a problem when we try to be absolutist about an issue that quite clearly has a range of informed opinion.

I agree.

How would a programme get proper people for free?

If we trail down to London (which is usually where this stuff is) it means we spend our time and lose money. Minimum would be one night in a hotel, and I don't want a fleabitten B&B - I want an experience in a 5* with expenses paid. London is 200+ miles from us, so 400 miles at 25mpg means £80+ in fuel. Wifey wants hair and make up people, so she looks OK on the telly.

When in London, we want to eat out, and that isn't cheap there. Cabs will be needed each way. So there is £250.

We then add in lost salaries and inconvenience, childminders, etc.......

Then some incentive for being on the show. Which will be aired again and again and again on every budget channel for the next decade.  (:)  Couple of grand each at least.........

Its easy to see that the bill will be at least £5000-£6000 to ship a couple in from the north, pay their bills and make it all cozy.

But then I asked for editorial approval of what they showed. I wont have us edited to make us look like muppets to suit an agenda, because if they keep it real, we could make a decent fist of normalising the "industry".

Some bloke on the dole writing a daft bint in Odessa? He'll do it for £100 beer money and his fifteen minutes of fame. So who do they choose? They can cut and edit him however they like. Why they end up with Dave from Waterfoot and not normal people here.

The more they pay the less they make. So logic dictates they pay next to nothing. Pay peanuts and you get monkeys.

There is a chunk of difference between paying your out of pocket expenses and paying you for your contribution or time. The difference was pointed out upthread.

Not really.

What about lost salary? Is that not an out-of-pocket expense?

I was under the impression that most films (at least here in the US) pay for everything when it comes to the chance to film something like this these days.

Seems reasonable to most. But you are right, they will likely go with monkeys.
makes better TV, have you ever seen a normal couple on one of these shows?
I agree there are many misfits and to show a couple is ok. But show both ends of the
spectrum and that cost a bit more.

Not read the thread since my last post, and don't intent on.

Thing is it's another small shot production firm who can see $$$$$$$, they've no idea how to create said show, but know it will generate $$$$$$$$$ if the broadcasters will entertain it.

If you know how TV works then anyone is in with a shot getting a slot on the old box!!! Thing is it's $100k maximum for a 30 minute off peak show, so it needs generate shock value to move to a more prime time venue, and that my friends is exactly what these boys are after.

Add too that little in way of communication, I can't believe anyone is giving them any airspace, nothing good will come of it.

Want a decent production firm, I know a couple, they'd do same for nothing and be honest with reporting, would it make prime TV? I very much doubt it.

Andrew, as an example:

I am making a telly show. I want a bloke who knows all about the MOB industry. A bloke who isn't camera shy. A bloke who can articulate well. I might want you......

But if I want to ship you in to London from Estonia, I'll have to cough for a nice hotel, some eats, a plane, some expenses. Further, I am taking you away from your harem and whatever you do each day to earn a crust. So I have to cover that too. But then I have to motivate you to spend your time in this way knowing you will be on Bravo*** and Dave*** for the 29th time in 2019.

Will you do that for free? I bet not. Forget the altruistic tenets of journalism, the ethics of payment and all that for a moment, just consider your time if I was some unknown bloke from a TV company. Will you do that for free? Doubtful eh?

Similarly, if these folks coughed up some readies, they would have the definitive show on the subject. But guess what? It would be boring as hell, because you might as well call it "Some regular blokes who met some nice women and lived happy ever after". Special guest stars "Manny and his agreeable wife and sprogg", Chris and his agreeable wife and sprogg", "Sparky and his agreeable wife" and "Rosco and his agreeable wife".

They would fall asleep at the screen.

What no scamming? No 19 year old brides? No sweaty, panting, fat blokes with dodgy toupees and even dodgier stains on the front of their trousers? Just blokes who married agreeable women, some of whom have kids, who live um........ normal lives? Stop press: kid goes to school on Tuesday. Stop press: bloke takes his wife to a restaurant. Stop press: wife goes to Tescos*. Watching a Russian bird buy baked beans and lettuce in Aldi* and climbing back into her Audi isn't really the same as dodgy old geezer with a roll-up importing too-young Svetlana - who speaks no English - to make his two up-two down, woodchip-clad hovel a cozy home on a pension from the Pru**.

The latter is television. The former clearly isn't. The latter is free. The former clearly isn't. If I am going to be on Dave*** for twenty years, I want a few quid out of it.

* Americans can substitute Tescos and Aldi for Wal-Mart or Target for context.
** Well known insurance company famous for good pensions.
*** "Dave" and "Bravo" are TV channels that famously run old shows again and again and again and again..........Ad infinitum
