Grandmothers return to Chernobyl?
« on: November 09, 2013, 06:51:00 PM »
I thought this was a strange CNN video.

But, how many of you knew that people were returning into the Chernobyl exclusion zone?

I had not heard anything before about this.  And her trip is 3 years old.

http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/world/2013/11/07/spc-ted-holly-morris-chernobyl-babushkas.cnn.html

And they are saying the people who returned are outliving those who relocated by as much as 10 years ....

As I understand there are people (mostly elderly) that never left the exclusion zone of Chernobly. I have seen films regarding this.

Regarding the article I quote ' Wolves from Chernobyl could spread mutant radioactive genes across Europe as they roam away from the nuclear disaster zone, warns study . . .

Wolf packs from Chernobyl's toxic nuclear disaster zone could spread mutant radioactive genes across Europe, a new study has suggested. . .

Researchers said it 'raises questions about the potential spread of radiation-induced genetic mutations to populations in uncontaminated areas'.

Dr Byrne said there is currently no evidence that mutations are being brought into the landscape.

It should be noted that most likely the wolves never left. Further there is no proof that the wolves have mutated to anything other than a wolf.

And it is all bollocky anyway. Spontaneous harmful mutation is almost always not transmitted to further generations because they are almost always traits that do not aid survival. If a mutation is beneficial then that's by definition not a bad thing.

Wolves with three heads are most unlikely to breed, even if the mutation is dominant it will not be expressed because nature has no need of a three headed wolf.

The whole radiation induced mutation thing is just a bogeyman tale from the 1950s. Apart from a slightly higher chance of dying earlier from cancer, living near Chernobyl is probably not a bad locale for those who choose a bucolic lifestyle.
...everything ends always well; if it’s still bad, then it’s not the end!

This is interesting to read regarding people returning to the edges of the exclusion zone. Starting a new life away from a war zone.
