Sino-Russian drills enter live-fire stage

A fleet of Chinese and Russian navies, with three warships from each side, arrived at a joint drill area on Tuesday to conduct live-fire exercises, a move to ensure both sides' maritime interests by tackling new challenges and threats in the region.

The six-day drill has formally entered the live-fire stage, experts said.
Both navies will begin exercises including defense of air routes and maritime traffic routes, search and rescue operations and anti-submarine tactics, as well as practice on air, sea and underwater targets with cannons of various calibers on Wednesday and Thursday.

The joint drills, taking place in the Yellow Sea from April 22 to Friday, involve 25 naval vessels, 13 aircraft, nine helicopters and two special fighting groups, making it the largest joint navy drill between the two nations in recent years.

Four Russian warships from the Pacific fleet, including the aircraft carrier Varyag, are participating in the drills. Missile destroyers, missile frigates, missile boats, a support vessel and a hospital ship gathered from China's side.

The exercises are practical and advanced since both navies have devoted their main forces, such as China's Harbin guided missile destroyer and Russia's Varyag, said Zhang Junshe, deputy director of Naval Military Studies Research Institute.

Li Jie, a researcher with the same institute, told Chinese media that both countries have displayed more technologically-advanced weapons compared with the military exercise in 2005.
China and Russia have held four military exercises since 2005, some of which have involved other countries.

People's Liberation Army Navy Commander Wu Shengli said on Tuesday that the first navy drill between Chinese and Russian navies could start a regular cooperation and more diversified joint exercises under the strategic partnership.

However, the drill has unsettled China's neighbors, as another drill is being conducted by the Philippines and the United States near the South China Sea.
The PLA Daily said on Monday that unnecessary concerns over the drill could become an obstacle to forging even closer ties between China and Russia and the development of both countries.

The drill no longer focuses as usual on anti-terrorism but on safeguarding regional security, said Liang Fang, a professor at the Strategic Research Institute at the National Defense University of the PLA.

"Both China and Russia are strong maritime powers that want to use the drill to ensure the safety of their maritime territories and sea lines of communication," she said.
"The defensive exercises are common and indispensable for those close countries to coordinate their actions with each other," she added.

Russian, Chinese Warships Start Joint Sea Exercise

Chinese and Russian warships on Tuesday left a naval base in the eastern Chinese harbor city of Qingdao to start a joint exercise in the Yellow Sea.

The Chinese navy's missile destroyer DDG-112 Harbin and other warships from both countries will rendezvous and conduct a series of drills over the next two days.

According to the plan for the exercise, warships from the two navies will build up a maritime defense system and conduct joint air defense, anti-submarine, supply, and search and rescue operations on Wednesday.

They will conduct joint operations on defending a maritime transport route and firing live ammunition at air, surface and underwater targets.

Vice Admiral Ding Yiping, general director for the joint exercise from the Chinese side, said the exercise will test the combat capabilities of both navies and improve their coordination and cooperation ability.

The Russian warships, including Slava-class guided missile cruiser Varyag, the flagship of the Russian Navy's Pacific Fleet, arrived in Qingdao on Saturday.

Both sides have conducted several joint table exercises at headquarters since April 22.

Chen Hu, editor-in-chief of World Military magazine, said he believes the exercise is a routine drill and is not targeted at any third party.

It is a result of a consensus reached by General Chen Bingde, chief of the general staff of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), and Russian military leaders during General Chen's visit to Russia last August, said Chen Hu.

Russia and China are intensifying cooperation in the military sphere

Russian-Chinese war games "Naval Interaction-2012" in the Yellow sea has entered its active phase on April 24. 25 warships, 13 aircrafts, 9 helicopters and 2 units of the special forces of the two countries participate in them. Taking into account the number of participating forces and the scenario, these manoeuvres are apparently the most large-scale in the modern history of bilateral relations.

According to "Interfax", the Russian party is represented in the war games by large antisubmarine ships "Admiral Tributz", "Marshal Shaposhnikov" and "Admiral Vinogradov", as well as logistics ships. The detachment is headed by the flagship of the Fleet – Guards' guided-missile cruiser "Varyag".

China is represented by 18 military ships, including the flagship missile destroyer "Harbin", and 5 missile frigates, including "Chzhoushan" and "Suyzhow", which were performing combat tasks on distant borders escorting ships in the Gulf of Aden.

The scenario includes joint crossing of a "dangerous" area, firing various weapons at sea and air targets, and rescue operations at sea. The ships will be covered from the air by deck helicopters Ka-27; and a sea infantry sub-unit of the Pacific Navy is placed under the detachment’s command in order to conduct special operations.

Frictions in the South China Sea - Chinese strategic mistake

On the eastern, ascendant flank of Eurasian continent, the Chinese vertigo economy is overheated and too-well integrated in the petrodollar system. Beijing, presently, cannot contemplate or afford to allocate any resources in a search for an alternative. (The Sino economy is low-wage- and labor intensive- centered. Chinese revenues are heavily dependent on exports and Chinese reserves are predominantly a mix of the USD and US Treasury bonds.) To sustain itself as a single socio-political and formidably performing economic entity, the People's Republic requires more energy and less external dependency.

Domestically, the demographic-migratory pressures are huge, regional demands are high, and expectations are brewing. Considering its best external energy dependency equalizer (and inner cohesion solidifier), China seems to be turning to its military upgrade rather than towards the resolute alternative energy/Green Tech investments - as it has no time, plan and resources to do both at once. Inattentive of a broader picture, Beijing (probably falsely) believes that lasting containment, especially in the South China Sea, is unbearable, and that - at the same time - fossil-fuels are available (e.g., in Africa and the Gulf), and even cheaper with the help of warships.
