Nizhny Tagil (Нижний Тагил)
Nizhny Tagil is one of several Russian cities in which the name begins with Nizhny. With a population close to 365,000 Nizhny Tagil is in Russia's Sverdlovsk Oblast, 25 kilometers (16 mi) east of the border between Europe and Asia.
Nizhny Tagil began in 1696 as a settlement and officially founded in 1722, combining several settlements connected to the construction of the Vyysky copper smelting plan. Over time the city developed as one of the early centers of Russian industrialization, and it has been a major producer of cast iron and steel.
In the centre of the downtown Theatrical Square is an 8m bronze statue commemorating Ye.A. and M.Ye. Cherepanov (Черепанов) the the father-and-son engineers who developed Russia's Russian steam locomotive in 1833.
According to Wikipedia, "The geological structure of the city is very complex. Its altitude varies from 170 to 380 meters. This makes Nizhny Tagil one of the rare natural store-rooms on the Earth. There are many mineral deposits containing 63 elements of the periodic table.
Rail lines and highways connect the city with others in all directions: with Yekaterinburg 130 kilometers (81 mi) to the south, with Serov and Priobye in the north, with Perm in the west, and with Alapayevsk and Verkhnyaya Salda in the east. The city is served by Salka Airport, located 17 km northeast of the city. It was a military base until 1994 and has now become a civil airport."
