Very nice pictures, Springirl. Never having been to Minsk, I had imagined that the city looked older.

I think the city did look older before it was almost all destroyed during the war.  Only a tiny part of pre-war Minsk survived.

 Nice pictures Springirl!

One of the pictures shows you standing behind a metal gate with a building in the background. Is that building a hotel?
My wife showed me a hotel in Dnepropetrovsk that they started building in the 1960's then abandon because it started sinking. It is still sitting there an abandoned shell along the Dnieppe river and looks very similar in style to that building in your picture.
Irina tells me that the two "wings" of the hotel were supposed to represent sails from a ship. It would be really interesting to know if these were sister buildings to each other.

Springirl!

Welcome back!

It is good to know that all of the dooms day people were wrong, and Belorussia is still on the map.

:)

I want to take a train ride up to visit when I am in Ukraine.  What do you think?

I have to buy a visa, do you think I should?

We do not need a visa for Ukraine; only for Belarus and Russia.
Be careful what you wish for, you might get it.

Are the Belorussian KGB a problem for travelers?

Or, is going to Belorussian safe and enjoyable right now?

The KGB doesnt bother you at all, although I would stay away from black unmarked SUV, with
men dressed in ninja black outfits....

And dont be stupid and take pictures of them or take pictures of KGB headquaters on the main prospect!

That building always reminded me of a TD bank building.
BTW that Turkish restaurant that is also on the river nearby was level in 2005, but by 2007 it was leaning quite bad.

"JC" can't post photos of a city he's never seen outside of a local brothel or hotel room. He can't be able to show shots like these.....

He's probably never even ventured out of the city to have the classic Belorussian tourist experience and Samagon at 'Deduki'

But don't worry "springgirl." He'll be be by next week to meet you just outside Октябрьская offer a 'high class meal' at
пр-т Независимости... :-X (:)

My appartment was actually accross the crown plaza (thats the street of that red cathedreal Jesus statue thing)...the same street as the "palace of the republic" you also posted.
